Good snowy morning Calgary!

Since the roads are horrible, I figured I should take this opportunity to fully introduce myself!

My name is Jess, and I am the brains and hands behind Same Stars Massage Therapy! I grew up in Ontario, but moved out to the mountains in 2008. I meant to just stay for a snowboard season, but I fell in love with Alberta, and that love still lasts today.

I did however return to Ontario to complete my massage training, because of the high standards of practice in the regulated province. The day after I wrote my board exams, I was back on a plane to the mountains!

There’s a lot I could share with you, but to give you a glimpse of who I am without boring you, I’ve chosen four of my most asked questions to answer.

Why did you choose massage?

This one’s easy! I grew up with aches and pains, a bit more than your average child. I was diagnosed with migraines at a very young age. They run in my family. So I know pain. I was also a provincial level gymnast so I have torn muscles, broken my back (technically I have “stress fractures” in my L4 L5 vertebrae) and I have dislocated a few joints over the years. I even had my own massage business when I was five. Foot massages in my family came for a low price of $5.

Why do you specialize in chronic pain clients?

Because they need it. Holistic healthcare and interventions can be SO beneficial for those who live with pain daily. The stress of being sick can actually create a whole different type of pain in the body. As a chronic pain sufferer myself, I strongly stand behind the mantra that “just because you can’t SEE the pain, doesn’t mean it’s not there”. My training in Ontario taught me to treat the client AS A WHOLE, and by focusing on chronic pain treatments, I believe I give those clients a safe space to heal.

Why did you start your own company?

It took me A LONG time to get the courage to do so! My husband finally sat me down and told me to stop living by other business’s rules and to make my own success. I was once told by a boss that I had to specialize in ONE type of treatment. I refuse to do so - if I can help someone, I should. Athletes, children, cancer patients, non-verbal, non-mobile, hospice patients. . .you name them, they deserve massage. And so Same Stars was born. We all live under the same night sky, we all deserve relief.

What do you do when you’re not massaging?

Think about massage? Just kidding. But I do! I sit on the Board of Directors for the MTAA, helping our profession grow and keeping it ethical. I am planning on also teaching a few courses this coming winter, if you’re a fellow Health Care Practitioner, keep an eye on our Instagram!

When I’m actually “off work”? I LOVE being outside. I hike when the weather is clear, and snowboard in the winter. I am taking Level 2 reiki at LunaHolistic under the amazing Samatha Baldwin at the moment to keep myself grounded and learn new ways to heal you! Bubble baths are high on the list of favourite past times for sure. I’m slowly learning to dirt bike, while cautiously keeping my limbs from breaking. I force my husband to snuggle (massage therapists obviously love touch!) and have two fur babies: a psychotic cat and a loving dog named Charly.

Hopefully this was a good introduction, and I didn’t scare you too much my fellow Calgarians! If you ever have any questions, feel free to reach me at samestarsmassage@gmail.com!

Peace, love, light and hulk hugs!
